What Is ABA Therapy?
Applied behavior analysis, or ABA, is the process of systematically applying interventions based upon the principles of learning to improve socially significant behaviors to a meaningful degree and to demonstrate that the interventions employed are responsible for an improvement in behavior. Through decades of research, the field of behavior analysis has developed many techniques for increasing useful behaviors and reducing those that interfere with learning. At BASS, we often use positive reinforcement to reward a child for good behavior. Our team monitors your child to understand his or her behavior to assess what is improvement for that child.
The strategies that we use in our comprehensive ABA therapy sessions come directly from the science of Behavior Analysis, which is backed by years of research that demonstrates utility and effectiveness. Our certified Behavior Analysts focus on observing behavior and build methods that are most effective for each individual. Every learner is different and they way he or she process information is different. Our goal at BASS is to provide step-by-step growth that is ideal for the individual child while incorporating a variety of factors like age, level of functioning, and many others.
St. Augustine ABA Therapy
A significant part of our step-by-step growth is verbal behavior programming. ABA therapy addresses the language and communication skills of the learner, but vocal isn’t always the primary method. We also encourage the learner to communicate in whatever way possible such as, sign language, picture-card exchange, or speech generating device. Our goal is to have your child communicate effectively, use fine motor skills, and to increase his or her independence.
There are two scientific ways to teach children who are in need of ABA therapy:
- Discrete Trial Instruction (DTI)
- Natural Environment Teaching (NET)
At BASS in St. Augustine, we use both methods so your child can reach his or her fullest potential.
Discrete Trial Instruction
DTI takes place in a more structured environment. It can take place in many different locations of our center, and our therapists have many tasks that they will work on with the child during the session. Because each child is unique, we break up the child’s goals into small tasks in which the child can achieve. If the child completes a requested behavior, he or she will be reinforced with an object with high preference.
Natural Environment Teaching
NET is more of a free-flowing session. Unlike DTI, there isn’t a structured plan being that the child is in his or her own environment. This type of teaching technic is more of a naturally occurring teaching opportunity. A great example is if a child is playing with a toy, the therapist will use it as a teaching tool because the toy is considered the most important object to the child at that point in time. NET allows children to work and play through their normal activities. It is considered a fast-paced environment that uses desires to learn.
